Canberra, Australia's capital and only major inland city is just a three hour drive or a 45-minute flight south-west of Sydney. Set in a broad valley in the southern tablelands of New South Wales, Canberra is a well-planned lakeside city of parklands, impressive restaurants, beautiful bushland and leafy suburbs. The Australian ski season starts in the middle of June and lasts until the beginning of October. The main ski resorts are Perisher-Blue, Thredbo and Charlottes Pass with Jindabyne being their gateway town. In the warmer months the area is a hub of activity with water-sports such as water skiing, windsurfing and fantastic trout and salmon fishing. Summer bushwalking in the mountains can be an enlightening experience, especially when the wildflowers in full bloom. The southern highlands district contains the historic townships of Mittagong, Bowral, Moss Vale, and Berrima with tea rooms and antique shops as well as the farming towns of Goulburn and Yass, famous for their Merino sheep. The South Coast, with white sandy beaches and lush green valleys is dotted with fishing towns such as Batemans Bay, Merrimbula and Eden. This area is renowned for its fresh seafood excellent fishing and surfing beaches. Bega, near the Victorian border has been famous for its cheese for more than a century and during the months of September to November many species of whale may be seen from Eden on their annual migration. On the North Coast, Coffs Harbour has white beaches, the Dorrigo World Heritage Rainforest that is easy to explore, good restaurants, exciting nightlife and luxury resorts, many with secluded beaches and rainforests. You can take joy flights and helicopter rides, play golf, sail, fish, go snorkelling or scuba diving, whitewater rafting on Nymboida River, horseriding and surfing or windsurfing. Further north is Yamba. an anglers dream, the famous "barrels" of Angourie which bring surfers the world over, like a magnet and the most eastern point of Australia, Byron Bay.The coast is a stunning stretch of white beaches backed by the lush rainforests of Mount Warning and Nightcap National Parks. The New South Wales/Queensland border town of Tweed Heads and its coastal and rural villages form a montage of pristine beaches for surfing and fishing, World Heritage national parks, river cruises, resort shopping and highlights such as the Minjungbal Aboriginal Culture Centre. The Western region of New South Wales is area of choice for fine country heritage. Many towns are well-preserved in a region whose natural credentials include crisp mountain air, bushwalks, wildlife and wilderness. Towns rich in history are Bathurst and Orange in the Western Plains. Both are handsome country towns - a legacy of the 19th century goldrush boom - and both are producing impressive local food specialities such as cool-climate wines, figs, mushrooms, berries and golden trout. A town which offers a taste of pioneer life is Dubbo, gateway to the New South Wales Outback. There's much to explore here including museums, galleries and the famous Western Plains Zoo.
