| | Maui Maui is the second-largest Hawaiian island. It has a sunny western coast covered in beautiful white-sand beaches, and its warm ocean waters are scattered with humpback whales. You can drive among jungle and waterfalls on the scenic Hana Highway, windsurf at Hookipa Beach, or enjoy a drink at Lahaina's historic taverns. The uplands or the eastern coast of Maui will give you a better idea of the island's offerings than a stay in a popular resort area. A must see is Haleakala, the massive mountain that provides the scenic backdrop to all of East Maui, the small towns of Haiku, Kula or Hana offer blissful respite from the West Maui scene.
Maui has some of the world's best windsurfing and boardsurfing, as well as a lot of good swimming, snorkeling and bodysurfing. Try Slaughterhouse Beach in the north for a quiet swim. Surfing is good on the windward northern and eastern coasts. Maalaea Pipeline is one of the world's top 10 breaks. Expert windsurfers absolutely must go to Hookipa Beach. There's also a fair bit to do in Maui's inland. Haleakala National Park has amazing hiking through its volcanic crater, and the whole island is crisscrossed with nature walks.
Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area is high up in the Kula Forest Reserve on the western slope of Haleakala. The park is in a forest and has picnic tables, camping and a network of trails. The miles of hiking trails will take you deep into woods of pine, cedar, eucalyptus and native forest.
