Alabama is also known as the Heart of Dixie. It has history, theatre, sports, great music, space, gardens, recreation, art, and great food. Alabama's history attracts most visitors. It is most often remembered for its controversial role during the civil rights movement when Gov. Wallace fought to keep segregation. Many of the attractions ( museums, sttaues and historical sites) are about this time in Alabama's past. The city of Montgomery is concidered the birth place of the civil rights movement. It is in this city that Rosa Parks was arrested for not moving to the back of a bus. Birmingham is an other city that has a lot of civil rights history. Alabam also has a lot of civil war history. Montgomery was also the first capital of the Confederacy.

In the south Alabama has a white sand beaches great for the sun,surf, and sea food. Orange Beach and Gulf Shores are popular beach destinations.

Alabama has warmth and sunshine for the greater part of the year. Spring arrives early, with the weather warming to the 60sF daily by March. Summer days average in the low 80s, with periods of 90 and above. Prolonged spells of severely cold weather are not frequent during the winter. Snow is a rarity except in higher altitudes of north Alabama.
