| | Placencia Sixteen miles of natural sandy beach, a wilderness of coral-studded cayes, a virgin mangrove-fringed lagoon, nearby jungle rivers, pristine rainforest, Garifuna, Creole and Mayan cultures, and ancient Maya ruins make Placencia the ideal location for the adventurous traveler. Southern Belize is still relatively undeveloped, making it a paradise for the nature lover. Snorkel and dive our uncrowded pristine reef, fish our rivers, flats, lagoons and the open sea, kayak the mangroves in our lovely lagoon, see an abundance of wildlife on the Monkey River tour, hike the Cockscomb Jaguar Preserve, visit the Maya ruins of Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit, or just grab a hammock and relax on the beach.
Sixteen mile long Placencia Peninsula is home to 3 communities: Maya Beach, Seine Bight, and at the southern tip, Placencia Village, with a claim to the best beaches on the mainland. You can arrive in Placencia by air or by road. If you have the time, no matter which direction you travel from, driving is interesting and scenic. The road into Placencia Village parallels the lagoon and terminates at the tip of the peninsula. Here is where dive shops and a number of tour guide services can be found. Close by are the docks, service station, bus stop, post office, and grocery stores. Locals boast Placencia Village to be one of the oldest inhabited communities in Belize. It was founded by English buccaneers in the early 1600's. Today it's basically a Creole fishing village with a very laid-back ambience where locals go out of their way to make sure you enjoy your visit. A one mile concrete sidewalk serves as the main street for Placencia Village. It has the distinction of being the narrowest street in the world in the "Guinness Book of World Records." A number of village accommodations, restaurants/bars, and gift shops are located along the walkway. From Placencia you can explore the Monkey River, travel inland to the Cockscomb Basin, visit a Maya ruin, Dive or Snorkel off nearby Cayes, take in some Offshore Fishing or just stretch out and relax in a hammock. The hardest thing to do might be to choose your next activity.You can scuba dive and experience the walls and canyons found in 60-80 feet of water.You can snorkel or rent a kayak and snorkel nearby Placencia Caye. Sport Fishing inside or outside the reef. Placencia is well known for it's Salt water fly fishing. Experience the peninsula and nearby communities between Seine Bight and Placencia by bike. Walk the Beach - It's about six miles between the village and some of the larger resorts. Scenic views along the way.
